Katsuoji Temple, located in Minoh City on the outskirts of Osaka, is well-known for its vibrant fall foliage and autumn illuminations. Established in 727, it has played an important role in Japan’s history as a place where famous figures have come to pray for good luck and success in battles.
The temple is also famous for its daruma dolls. Daruma are ornaments modeled after the semi-legendary Buddhist monk Bodhidharma.
Known as Kachi Daruma (“daruma that bring victory”), the daruma dolls at Katsuoji are considered special due to the temple being known as a temple of success in all aspects of life.
Katsuoji promotes the idea that winning does not mean defeating others, but overcoming one’s own challenges with the motto: fall down seven times and get back up eight times.
DARUMA
At first, the eyes are completely white and you must colour in a (black) pupil in the left eye while making a wish. When your wish comes true, you complete it by colouring in the pupil of the right eye.
There are many daruma dolls that have been returned to the temple as a thank-you after their owner’s wishes came true.

Autumn Leaves and Special Light Up 2023 starts from November 11, 2023 to December 3, 2023 after sunset until 20:30 each day (last entry is at 20:00)
OMIKUJI
Omikuji (fortune-telling slip) is inside the daruma. It costs ¥500 per drama. Given QR code in each fortune-telling slip, you can read your fortune in English from your mobile phone. The temple has a lot of fortune-telling daruma statues on the temple grounds.
